The performance “Birds Never Sleep” is the story of a suitcase travelling trough time and space and a couple who love, hate, remember and separate…because of an actual war. Nothing left but hope: waiting and waiting and fighting against enemy or their own nightmares: simultaneous actions of the man and the woman in separate worlds. The only thing which keeps them alive is the power of love, the bird who brings the message in the last moment.
The piece was inspired by the personal and social interests and dilemmas of the performers involving the conflict in Ukraine. Unfortunately the theme of war is time and spaceless: it has been always going on somewhere. What for? What can we do? How to stop this? Or how to fight? Love or hate? What is love and then how to love? ...everybody has a suitcase to open… To give a form to this universality we use the metaphorical language of physical theatre. Pure space without any decoration, only the suitcases which become alive and transform to persons, train, swimming pool, or even a parachute. And a coat which becomes a giant creature or the uncontrollable evil plastic tubes, the letter which transforms from boat to an origami bird. Tragic and comical moments giving shifts to each other. The recorded music becomes alive: the instruments appear step by step and all the objects are part of creating the soundscape. At the end the audience can get involved into the circulation of history: with passing the case to each other they give a respect to the last journey of the victims and reconnect the couple... The appearing white origami bird is dedicated to the audience and really given to the theatre as a present; the message of peace. We feel personal engagement to bring this bird to as many theatres of different cities/countries as possible. The piece can be performed as small episodes or a part of an installation/exhibiton as well. In this case we can adapt to public spaces and make the episodes sitespecific. The full theatre piece requires a space of min. 80 square meters, with side curtains/flats. Two micfrophone and sound system is needed and the light and sound can be managed by one technician. The piece was invited to the MAPA Studio Haarlem residency program, where we had our work in progress presentation in front of Dutch audience with great success in end of November 2014. The premier happened on 19th of February 2015 at the cultural program series of CEU Center of Arts and Culture in Budapest. The performance was dedicated to the victims of the first big clash on Maidan Kiev one year ago. Next performances will happen at Les Kurbas Center, Kiev supported by Hungarian Embassy in Kiev. One of the audience commented about the event: „Not one word was spoken yet a thousand emotions were stirred, PTAH Theatre's 'Birds Never Sleep' last night was a phenomenal five-star art performance. Amazing use of props, symbolism and space.” (Shaileshwori Sharma , facebook/ Center of Art and culture) Devised and performed and music by : Agnes Domonkos (HU), Mykola Bondarchuk(UA) Coach: Virág Dezső (HU), Ide van Heiningen(NL) Supported by: MAPA, SÍN Culture Center, Badacsony Region |
